A Real Mahjong Solitaire That Teaches Hebrew Letters

Hebrew Mahjong is a free hebrew alphabet game built around a real Mahjong solitaire board: 24 tiles stacked in 2–3 layers, across three layouts — Pyramid, Tower and Lantern. Only free tiles can be selected, and each valid pair joins a Hebrew letter with its letter name.

Unlike classic Mahjong, identical tiles never match here — you always have to recall a name, not just spot a duplicate. It's a hebrew letter matching game for anyone who wants to learn the hebrew alphabet for adults without a childish wrapper. For background reading alongside the game, see our Hebrew alphabet guide.

How Hebrew Mahjong Works

  • Find a pair

Tap a free tile with a Hebrew letter, then the tile with its name — for example ש and Shin. Only free tiles can be selected; a tile is free when nothing covers it and one side is open.

  • Hear it

New letters are introduced with recorded audio. If you pick the wrong pair, the board shows and speaks the correct answer so you learn from the mistake.

  • Clear the board

Each board takes about 1–2 minutes to clear. Letters you miss come back more often until they become familiar.

Why It Works

Every Match Is a Memory Test

Instead of matching two identical pictures, you recall a letter name from memory each time you choose a pair. That small act of recall is what makes a letter stick.

Built for Look-Alike Letters

Dalet and Resh, Bet and Kaf, Vav and Yod, and other easily confused letters are introduced carefully and revisited, so the differences that matter become familiar.

It Adapts as You Play

Letters you find difficult appear more often, while letters you already know fade into lighter review. The game keeps adjusting to where your practice is actually needed.

No Pressure, Ear and Eye Together

There is no timer, no lives and no game-over screen, so you can take the time a letter needs. Recorded letter-name audio reinforces the written form as you play.

What You'll Learn

Hebrew Mahjong covers all 22 standard Hebrew letters and their names, staged across 7 sets so you are never faced with the whole aleph-bet at once. Letters that look alike — such as Dalet/Resh, Bet/Kaf and Vav/Yod — are introduced carefully and brought back for review until they are easy to tell apart.

Final forms, niqqud and reading words are not the focus of this game. Once you know the aleph-bet, continue with niqqud, vocabulary and beginner reading in the HebrewEdu app.

Who It's For

Hebrew Mahjong is for adults and teens starting Hebrew from zero who want something less childish than a kids' alphabet app, for bar and bat mitzvah students, and for anyone learning modern or Biblical Hebrew. It also works well for parents learning alongside their kids, and for Mahjong players who want a familiar game that teaches something real — including another Hebrew alphabet game, Alef Bet Rush, if you'd like a faster-paced way to practise the same letters.
